Young rookie could be back tonight vs. the Rangers

Ryan Leonard and the Washington Capitals got an injured reserve clue before the New York Rangers game.
Tuesday brought a little breadcrumb for Caps watchers when Leonard stopped showing up on the injured reserve line of the NHL media roster. It was the kind of tiny update that usually means something, but warmups still decide everything.
Not long after, Washington activated Leonard from injured reserve, officially making him available to dress against New York. Coach Spencer Carbery also had him taking reps in the morning skate, including a look on the first power-play unit.
That matters because Leonard isn't just a feel good rookie story, he's been a real driver in the middle of the lineup. The 20-year-old, drafted eighth overall by Washington in 2023, has 7 goals and 11 assists for 18 points in 29 games.
Ryan Leonard return boosts Capitals options
Caps fans have been missing Leonard's edge, especially with the roster feeling wobbly heading into the break. If he's truly ready, that quick strike game and puck hunger changes the vibe fast.
On the ice, his value is simple and loud, he helps you get the puck back and keep it. Leonard can win wall battles, get inside the dots, and turn a harmless cycle into a greasy slot chance.
Against a Rangers team that can punish sloppy exits, Washington's details have to tighten up early. If Leonard plays, the milestone is seeing how his minutes build, and whether the Caps' power play looks less predictable as the night goes on.
