The Washington Capitals will finally get one of their key blue-liners back tonight. Defenseman Rasmus Sandin is returning to the lineup after missing five games with an upper-body injury, while Logan Thompson gets the start in goal against the St. Louis Blues.

Reporter Bailey Johnson shared the update ahead of puck drop, marking Sandin's first appearance since late October. His return couldn't come at a better time. During his absence, Washington went 1-3-1, allowing 17 goals in those five games and struggling to move the puck cleanly out of the defensive zone.
Before his injury, Sandin was averaging 19:24 of ice time per night - Fourth among Capitals defensemen - and had registered two assists in 7 games. His composure under pressure and ability to transition the puck make him one of head coach Spencer Carbery's most trusted players on the back end.

Rasmus Sandin's return gives blue line much-needed stability

With Sandin back, the Capitals can restore some normalcy to their pairings. He's expected to slot alongside Matt Roy or Jakob Chychrun, reuniting a balanced left-right combination that had been a bright spot before the injury. The power play may also benefit, with Sandin likely reclaiming his spot on the second unit where his crisp passing and point shot help generate zone time.
In his absence, Washington's special teams faltered - the power play converted on just one of its last 11 attempts, while the penalty kill hovered around 77%. Sandin's return won't fix everything, but his vision and puck control can settle things down in both directions.
Here's Bailey Johnson's update confirming his return:
The Capitals enter tonight's matchup 6-5-1, sitting near the bottom of the Metropolitan Division and still seeking consistency. Getting Sandin back, along with Thompson's steady goaltending, offers a glimmer of stability for a group that's been battered by injuries and uneven results.
