Breaking news in Capitals Nation: The Washington Capitals organization has re-signed forward Spencer Smallman to a two-way, two year contract extension.
Well, it appears that Spencer Smallman has cemented his role in the Capitals organization for the next couple of seasons.
After a strong regular season with the Capitals farm affiliate in Hershey, Smallman has earned himself a solid contract worth $775,000 at the NHL level (the league minimum) and $380,000 in Hershey.
Washington Capitals re-sign Spencer Smallman
While his last name may be Smallman, his style of play is anything but.
The veteran forward has bounced around a fair amount during his eight years in professional hockey, but he's found a home in Hershey.
Smallman has played for seven different teams over the past eight seasons, often struggling to secure a permanent roster spot.
Fast forward to now, the 28 year old veteran has impressed the Washington Capitals front office, posting a career high in points and assists over the course of the 2024-25 season.
This year, Smallman notched 9 goals and 24 assists and was a -5 rating on the ice.
The contract extension comes after general manager Chris Patrick re-signed several pending UFAs at the NHL level, including Jakob Chychrun, Dylan McIlrath, Logan Thompson, and Charlie Lindgren, and brought in three college prospects on Monday, including Ryan Leonard, Ryan Chesley, and David Gucciardi.
Smallman's career began back in 2015 when the Carolina Hurricanes selected him in the 5th round of the NHL entry draft.
This contract extension is a significant one, to say the least.
Smallman's impressive offensive play has propelled the team to new heights, helping the Bears become the first AHL team to clinch a spot in the 2025 postseason.
The Bears will aim continue their dominance as they strive to secure their third consecutive Calder Cup.
