The Washington Capitals made a quiet move on Monday, trading defenseman Calle Rosen to the St. Louis Blues in exchange for Corey Schueneman. The newly acquired blueliner will report directly to the Hershey Bears, Washington's AHL affiliate.

It's a depth-for-depth swap - the kind of deal that rarely makes headlines but matters to teams managing injuries and organizational balance. Schueneman, 30, brings left-shot stability and experience at both the AHL and NHL levels. He's appeared in 35 NHL games across stints with Montreal, Calgary, and St. Louis, posting two goals and five assists.
This season, Schueneman had played nine games for the Springfield Thunderbirds, tallying one goal and 6 points, eight penalty minutes, and a plus-2 rating. Known more for his reliability than flash, he can handle second-pair AHL minutes or step into an NHL depth role if needed.
Rosen, 31, departs after spending most of the season with Hershey, where he logged one goal and seven pointed and a plus-2 rating in nine games. He appeared in 49 NHL games with St. Louis in 2022-23, registering eight goals and 10 assists, but never carved out a permanent role in Washington's rotation.

Corey Schueneman adds left-side depth for Hershey

For Hershey, the move gives head coach Todd Nelson another veteran option as the Bears continue their strong start in the AHL's Atlantic Division.
Here's the official announcement from the team:
It's the kind of transaction that reinforces how Washington builds from the bottom up. Schueneman's steadiness could prove useful later in the season, particularly if call-ups or injuries strike again. For now, the Bears gain a dependable defender with NHL experience - and the Capitals maintain flexibility heading into a long winter.
