Big day for the Washington Capitals prospect pool as Petr Sikora and Maxim Schäfer headline early 2026 World Juniors news.

Czechia and Germany still have cuts to make, but getting on these first lists matters.
Petr Sikora is the more familiar name for Caps fans now. The 19 year old center plays for HC Oceláři Třinec in the Czech Extraliga and was a sixth round pick, 178th overall, in the 2024 draft.
His post draft year was a breakout. Sikora put up seven goals and eight assists for 15 points in 34 games against men, then went to the 2025 World Juniors and posted four goals and three assists in seven games on Czechia's bronze medal run.
Maxim Schäfer has come on quickly. The 18 year old German winger is a third rounder from 2025, 96th overall, now skating in the QMJHL for Chicoutimi after leaving the Eisbären Berlin system, and he already has 13 points in his first 15 games there.
Germany leaned on Schäfer at the last World Juniors. He scored twice in the relegation game against Kazakhstan, a huge part of keeping Germany in the top division for this very 2026 tournament.

Stylistically, Sikora is a smart two way center who hunts pucks on the forecheck and wins a lot of ugly battles, which should translate well to short tournament hockey.
Schäfer brings more chaos, in a good way. At six foot three he parks at the net front, times his routes into space, and loves cleaning up rebounds, exactly the kind of game that swings momentum in a single elimination setting.
All of this stacks on top of a prospect pool that outside folks already call one of the league's best, headlined by Ryan Leonard, Cole Hutson, and Andrew Cristall.
Sikora and Schäfer might sit lower on those lists today, but strong World Junior showings can change internal depth charts fast.
Final rosters, lines, and roles will tell us more in December, yet for now it is simple.
