Tom Wilson got T.J. Oshie cracking up at Washington Capitals practice, and Ryan Leonard suddenly mattered too.

Wednesday's mic'd up clip had the usual chirps, plus a little nostalgia when Oshie showed up around the bench at MedStar. For a guy who retired in June, he still looks like he belongs.
Wilson leaned into it after a drill and played it perfectly dead serious. He told Oshie he needed him back on the ice, right side, like the old days.
The joke landed because Washington's actual right side has been thin lately. Leonard, the 2023 eighth overall pick, is out with a shoulder injury after a Jacob Trouba hit, and he had 18 points in 29 games before it happened.

As a fan, it's impossible not to grin when that «Right side» line comes back to life for a second. It also says a lot about the room, Wilson can keep things loose while still pointing at a real need.
Oshie's résumé is why that banter hits harder than a random practice gag. He retired at 38 with 695 points in 1,010 NHL games, won the Cup in 2018, and St. Louis took him 24th overall back in 2005.
Wilson isn't exactly kidding around this season, either. The 2012 first-rounder has 17 goals and 32 points in 30 games, and he's doing it while wearing a letter and dragging shifts into the fight.
Tactically, losing a right-shot winger like Leonard squeezes exits and makes controlled entries tougher to keep clean. You feel it on the forecheck too, the timing looks different when a young engine isn't on his usual routes.
That's why the Oshie cameo worked, it reminded everyone what Washington's identity looks like when the right side is rolling. Now the next checkpoint is simple, get healthy, get Leonard back, and let Wilson keep driving the tone.
