There was plenty of buzz last night in Washington as the Washington Capitals hosted the St. Louis Blues and with the Team Canada general manager in the building the stakes felt a little higher. Right-winger Tom Wilson and goaltender Logan Thompson both showed up big, potentially tilting the conversation toward their Maple Leaf-coloured future.

Wilson ripped in two goals and a plus-2 rating in 13:54 of ice time.
He established his physical presence early and then converted the chances when they came.
Thompson's stats were incredible on the night as well, stopping 23/24 shots. He turned aside a substantial number of shots and kept the Blues from gaining traction in tight moments. His season numbers show 6-3-0 with a 1.45 GAA and a .938 save percentage, which puts him among the elite so far.

Wilson hit big, Thompson stood tall

From the drop of the puck Wilson set the tone by delivering a heavy body check that flipped momentum in favour of the Capitals. Then he found the back of the net twice, showing crisp timing and finishing instincts. Fans know Wilson isn't just a bruiser-last night he showed postseason-level poise too.
Thompson meanwhile carried the calm needed when things got tight. With traffic around the crease and the Blues probing for a bite, he was square, composed and sharp. A selection committee from Canada will always take notice of that.
As a fan I could feel the momentum shift when Wilson leveled a defender and two minutes later he was celebrating. Thompson's saves gave the Capitals the breathing room to capitalize, a combo any national team loves to see.
Having the General Manager for Team Canada in attendance added extra weight to the performance. Wilson and Thompson weren't just playing for the Capitals tonight-they were auditioning. Wilson's two-goal explosion reinforced his dual value (offence + physicality). Thompson backed it up with elite goaltending numbers that signal reliability under pressure.
Neither spot on Team Canada is guaranteed, but tonight both players made a clear case. For the Capitals the bonus is obvious: if you're producing and getting national-team innovation at the same time, your stock rises.
Look for Wilson and Thompson's names to come up in internal Canada conversations soon. It's not just about big hits or flashy saves-it's about demonstrating you can deliver when it matters most. Tonight they did exactly that.
