The Washington Capitals are trying to fix a familiar issue: the shootout. Head coach Spencer Carbery turned to TJ Oshie for a little extra guidance this week.

Oshie, one of the best shootout specialists of his generation, worked with the team on technique and mindset. The veteran forward, now 38, still carries the swagger that made him Team USA's shootout hero back in Sochi 2014.
Carbery told reporters the Capitals dedicated time to shootout reps during Friday's practice. He added that Oshie joined in to consult the group, sharing his insights on approach and deception.

TJ Oshie shares wisdom with Washington Capitals

It's no secret that Washington has struggled in shootouts lately. The club ranks near the bottom of the league in that category over the past two seasons. Goals have been scarce, and confidence has slipped.
As a fan, it's encouraging to see Carbery seek creative help instead of accepting mediocrity. Oshie's knack for reading goalies and adjusting mid-deke could rub off on younger players like Connor McMichael or Hendrix Lapierre.
Oshie has converted more than 50 percent of his career shootout attempts, an elite rate by NHL standards. His combination of patience and precision might be exactly what the Capitals need to turn extra points their way.
Washington sits just outside a playoff spot and every point matters. Cleaning up their shootout game could make the difference come April. Carbery's decision to call on Oshie shows both humility and trust in a respected leader.
This little Oshie cameo also feels like a reminder that details matter. When you can steal an extra point or two in December, you buy yourself breathing room before the spring squeeze.
Fans should expect the team to keep experimenting in that area, especially if the practice work translates to actual results soon.
