The Washington Capitals will catch a small break tonight in Tampa Bay - the Lightning will be without one of their most reliable two-way forwards. Head coach Jon Cooper confirmed that center Anthony Cirelli will miss the game with an undisclosed injury, though he's expected to return Wednesday against the New York Rangers.

Reporter Eduardo Encina first shared the update on social media, noting that Cirelli's absence leaves a noticeable hole in Tampa's lineup. The 28-year-old has long been the Lightning's shutdown pivot, regularly matching up against top opposition centers and leading the team's penalty kill. Through 14 games this season, he's logged seven goals and eleven points while averaging over 18 minutes per night - fifth most on the team amongst forwards.
For the Capitals, who have struggled to generate offense during their recent skid, Cirelli's absence could be the opening they need. Washington have not been playing their greatest hockey lately, but has been showing more life in its last few outings, fueled by the return of Rasmus Sandin.

Capitals aim to exploit Lightning depth without Cirelli

Without Cirelli, Tampa Bay will likely lean on Brayden Point to take defensive-zone draws and handle key penalty-kill minutes. It's a challenging gap to fill against a Capitals team that has been improving its puck possession numbers, even if the goals haven't yet followed.
Washington's second line, centered by Connor McMichael, could particularly benefit from softer matchups. McMichael's quickness and playmaking have stood out lately, and Spencer Carbery may see this as a chance to open up his team's offense after a stretch of close, low-scoring games.
Here's Eduardo Encina's report on the Lightning's lineup news:
Cirelli's absence doesn't make Tampa any less dangerous - with Kucherov, Point, and Hedman still leading the charge - but for a Capitals team hungry to snap its losing streak, every edge matters.
