Ryan Leonard keeps stacking points as the Washington Capitals rookie surges and head coach Spencer Carbery leans on his emerging power forward game.

On Wednesday the 20 year old winger torched the San Jose Sharks for two goals and two assists in a 7-1 Washington win. He became the first Capitals rookie with a four point night since Nicklas Backstrom pulled it off back in 2008.
That eruption capped a four game point streak and points in five of his last six games for the 20 year old winger.
Drafted eighth overall by Washington in 2023, he already has seven goals, 18 points, 60 shots and a plus seven rating through 28 games.

Ryan Leonard extends rookie scoring surge

So much of his production comes from simple habits, as he waits out defenders, slides to the front and makes himself a constant problem.
After the win head coach Spencer Carbery raved about Leonard's talent and drive, saying he saw that work ethic on day one. Carbery pointed to how the rookie keeps pushing to get better every night, which is exactly what a staff wants from a young scorer.
At six foot one and about 205 pounds, Leonard has the frame to live in the hard areas without sacrificing skill. Carbery has already trusted him on the power play and alongside veterans like Alex Ovechkin in key situations.
His four point explosion came as Washington grabbed its sixth straight win and ninth victory in the last ten games.
The Capitals jumped into first place in the Metropolitan Division, and it suddenly feels like this group has real scoring depth.
Earlier this week Sammi Silber noted how Leonard was already climbing the rookie scoring list, and this outburst only tightens his grip on that spotlight.
He is learning faster reads, making quicker plays off the wall, and looking less like a kid surviving and more like a driver.
Next up is Anaheim on Friday, another chance for Leonard to stretch the streak and prove this surge is his new normal.
