Matt Roy and Jakob Chychrun have the Washington Capitals blue line winning games.

A Benchrates update making the rounds Thursday put a dollar sign on it, suggesting the Chychrun Roy pair has climbed past the $5 million mark in five on five defensive contribution.
That kind of model is never gospel, but it matches what the eye test says most nights, the Caps look hardest to play against when those two are eating minutes.
The fit is clean. Roy keeps a tight gap, kills plays early, and makes the first pass that starts the breakout instead of the next whistle.

Jakob Chychrun and Matt Roy drive defense value

As a fan, you can feel the bench settle when Roy is next over the boards.
Chychrun gets to be aggressive because the safety net is real. When Washington exits clean, he's already jumping into space, and suddenly the puck is in the slot instead of stuck on the wall.
The numbers around the team back that up, too. On Sunday, Logan Thompson posted a shutout in a 2 0 win over Columbus, and Chychrun scored again, continuing a season where his goal total has led NHL defensemen at points.
Washington built this pairing on purpose. The Caps signed Roy as a free agent on July 1 2024, then traded for Chychrun the next day, betting that a steady right shot could unlock Chychrun's pace.
Roy is 30, a 2015 seventh round pick by Los Angeles, and he plays like someone who learned the hard way how to survive NHL forechecks. Chychrun, 27, was a 2016 first rounder by Arizona, and his skating still tilts the rink.
If the next stretch gets tighter, this is the kind of duo that travels, closes the middle, and lets Washington chase the next win without getting cute.
