Aliaksei Protas and Alex Ovechkin had Washington Capitals fans wincing Thursday.

The scary moment came behind the net when Protas went down after a heavy hit and stayed there. Sammi Silber noted a scrum formed fast, with Ovechkin right in the middle as trainer Jason Serbus came out.
Washington didn't get a dramatic stoppage update, but the end result mattered, Protas kept playing. The 24-year-old, a 2019 third-round pick by the Caps, later finished the night with a goal and an assist in a 6-3 win over New York.
That win had Tom Wilson's fingerprints all over it, two goals, one assist, and a fight for a Gordie Howe hat trick. His late tally was also his 200th career goal, the kind of milestone that usually pulls a bench together.
On the ice, the Caps kept it simple after the chaos, funnel pucks low, get bodies to the crease, and make the Rangers defend inside. Protas' goal fit that script, a net-front play that rewarded Washington's willingness to attack the blue paint.

Aliaksei Protas scare pulls Alex Ovechkin in

Caps fans hate seeing Protas motionless, because his straight-line game is hard to replace.
Ovechkin's involvement told you this wasn't just noise, it was a message about protecting teammates and matching the temperature. He also helped on the scoresheet, feeding Justin Sourdif on a power-play goal that opened up breathing room.
The Rangers tried to answer with pushback and quick strikes, but Washington's structure held when it mattered most. The Caps limited second chances after the initial saves, then cashed on rush looks when New York started pressing.
Now it turns into a quick reset, a New Year's Day matinee in Ottawa waiting on the back end of the back-to-back. If Washington brings the same edge and keeps its exits clean, the next checkpoint is stacking another two points.
