Ryan Leonard keeps quietly stacking rookie points as Tom Wilson buries power play chances for the Washington Capitals.

Tarik El Bashir's latest note from the press box summed it up perfectly. Leonard's secondary assist on Tom Wilson's first period power play goal gave him his third helper in four games and his thirteenth point, good enough to pull him into the top tier of NHL rookies.
The play itself looked simple, but it showed why coaches trust Leonard in scoring situations. He won a puck on the wall, bumped it low, then drifted into soft ice, dragging coverage and opening the seam that eventually freed Wilson in the slot.
That kind of subtle work is becoming a pattern. Leonard, just twenty years old, was drafted eighth overall in 2023 and signed out of Boston College after back to back thirty goal seasons that turned him into one of the most feared shooters in college hockey.

Ryan Leonard turns promise into early production

His breakout moment probably came last week against the Edmonton Oilers when he scored twice, ending a long goal drought with a nasty backhand finish that showed off the full power forward package.
Since then the points have started to drip in steadily. Public trackers like StatMuse and PuckReporter have him hanging around the top five in rookie scoring, which is exactly where you want a first round winger eight months into his NHL life.
The underlying numbers are catching up too. Leonard already has over thirty career NHL points when you include last season's short stint, and he is flirting with a half point per game pace, a strong marker for a first year power forward.
All of this is happening while Washington quietly climbs the Metropolitan standings with a 14-9-2 record and thirty points, sitting right in the thick of a messy playoff race.
