Ryan Leonard injury update has Washington Capitals fans exhaling as the rookie winger starts feeling like himself again.

Leonard returned Tuesday against the New York Rangers and logged two assists in a 7-3 loss at Capital One Arena. It was his first game back from injured reserve, and it showed how quickly his hands can settle a frantic shift.
Washington announced earlier this month that the 20-year-old would miss three to four weeks after a shoulder injury in Anaheim. Coach Spencer Carbery also referenced facial injuries, while stressing it was not a concussion.
In Sammi Silber's post, Ryan Leonard admitted he'd never experienced an injury like this and had never missed games before. He said it stinks, but he keeps cheering the team on and trying to be the best teammate possible.
The timing was brutal, because he was coming off a four-point night, two goals and two assists, in San Jose on Dec. 3. Through 29 games he had 61 shots and 43 hits, a loud mix of skill and edge for a rookie winger.

Ryan Leonard injury update sparks Capitals reset

Honestly, Caps fans just want that north-south spark back, because the forecheck has looked half a step slow lately. When Leonard is flying, he forces rushed exits, and Washington gets the puck back before the next line change.
Before the hit, Carbery had started using him as a net-front bumper on the top power-play unit with Dylan Strome. Leonard wins pucks below the goal line, then slips quick touch passes into the slot for John Carlson's one-timer.
At five-on-five, his best shifts still start on entries, he drives wide, chips to space, and arrives first on the rebound. That straight-line pressure keeps defenders turned, and it gives Washington's centers an easier second touch in the middle.
The Capitals have lost six of their last seven games, and Tuesday's collapse against New York showed how thin the margin is right now. Leonard's return does not fix the defensive leaks, but it does add another puck carrier who can relieve pressure.
Washington should still be careful with his minutes, especially on back-to-backs, because a shoulder issue can get stubborn fast.
