Ryan Leonard has juice for the Washington Capitals, rookie scoring and a bigger role are suddenly real.
Caps Today notes Leonard has five points, one goal and four assists, in six games since returning on Dec. 23. He sits fourth among NHL rookies in points, fifth in assists, and tied for seventh in goals.
On Saturday against Chicago, Leonard popped his eighth goal and dragged the game back level late in regulation. The club has gone 12-4-2 this season when he records at least one point, which is a pretty clean marker of influence.
What keeps jumping off the screen is how much he's doing in modest minutes. Among rookies averaging under 14 minutes a night, he leads in points and assists, and he's also drawn 18 penalties.
Ryan Leonard boosts Washington Capitals offense
The fun part as a fan is how every shift feels like it might tilt the ice. Coach Spencer Carbery and the staff are still pushing the 200-foot habits, because the matchups are getting heavier.
The Hockey News recently captured that balance, with Tom Wilson praising how good Leonard looks with the puck and how high the ceiling is. Carbery also framed it simply, when Washington needs a goal, Leonard is going out.
Tactically, Leonard isn't just collecting points on broken plays, he's earning them with pressure and retrievals. He closes fast on the forecheck, wins body position on the wall, and gets pucks into the slot before defenses can reset.
That two-way demand fits his profile as the 2023 eighth overall pick, drafted by Washington, and still only 20 years old. If he keeps stacking these details, the next milestone is seeing his minutes rise when the games tighten up.
