Ryan Leonard is suddenly the engine of the Washington Capitals rookie push, and the underlying numbers are getting loud.
On X, Tarik El-Bashir shared a fresh Sportlogiq dump on Leonard's last nine games in all situations.
Across 138 minutes, Leonard ranks near the top of Washington forwards in offensive-zone puck time, scoring chances, slot shots, and cycle chances.
That tracking matches Thursday, when Leonard posted two goals and two assists in a 7-1 demolition of the San Jose Sharks.
Alex Ovechkin also scored twice, giving Washington a wildly fun generational multi-goal night from age 20 to age 40.
Ryan Leonard's analytics back the hype
You can feel Capitals fans shifting from hopeful to genuinely hyped every time Leonard hops the boards now.
In those nine games, Leonard has ten points, four goals and six assists, pulling within two of the NHL rookie scoring lead, per El-Bashir.
For the season he is up to 18 points, already a key piece of a 17-9-2 Washington team sitting atop the Metropolitan Division.
Sportlogiq has him second among Capitals forwards in offensive-zone possession time despite only seventh in ice time, a sign of growing confidence with the puck.
He is third in slot shots, tied near the top in cycle chances, and already fifth in offensive-zone pass completions over that stretch.
This is what the Capitals imagined when they grabbed the Massachusetts native eighth overall in the 2023 draft, a skilled winger built for playoff hockey. Now the 20-year-old, fresh off World Junior MVP honours and a starring college run, is translating that north-south, crash-the-net game to NHL pace.
The staff is already feeding Leonard steady offensive-zone starts and power-play minutes, and he has chipped in one power-play goal with four helpers there.
When a rookie tilts the ice like that, coaches usually stop worrying about age and start worrying more about getting him another shift.
The next step is simple, keep stacking five-on-five nights where he drives play from the slot instead of waiting for chances.
