Hershey Bears move Garin Bjorklund to South Carolina as Mitch Gibson steadies the crease.
The ECHL transaction wire shows Washington reassigned Bjorklund from Hershey to the South Carolina Stingrays on Wednesday. It's a clean paper move, but it changes the nightly math for both affiliates.
For Hershey, it's also a vote of confidence in Gibson, who has looked comfortable when the pace ramps up. He doesn't play like a guy just trying to survive his next shot, he plays like a guy trying to win his next shift.
That matters because the Bears' identity is still built on structure, layered defense, and letting the goalie finish the work. When the crease is calm, their D can hold tighter gaps and keep exits simple instead of chasing chaos.
Gibson's best calling card lately has been composure, not flash. In a recent 4-0 win over Charlotte, he stopped 36 shots for his first AHL shutout, and his AHL record improved to 5-0-0.
He's 26 now, a 2018 fourth-round pick by the Washington Capitals at 124th overall, and his path has always been about patience. Bjorklund, meanwhile, is 23 and was drafted by Washington in the sixth round, 179th overall in 2020.
Garin Bjorklund shift opens Mitch Gibson runway
Technically, he helps them in subtle ways that fit Hershey hockey. He limits second chances by killing rebounds into soft areas, and that lets the Bears' breakout start with one clean touch instead of three panicked swats.
Bjorklund's reassignment also isn't a verdict on his talent, it's workload and availability. He had a 4-4-1 record with Hershey this season, along with a 3.01 goals-against average and .895 save percentage in nine AHL games.
For South Carolina, it's a real upgrade to get him back in the mix. He posted a 21-4-3 record with a .927 save percentage and 2.02 goals-against average with the Stingrays in 2024-25, and that level can steal points in a hurry.
Zooming out, this is the kind of depth juggling Washington loves having in its system, especially when injuries and schedule density hit.
