Roster movement appears likely in Washington
The Washington Capitals and Hershey Bears might be lining up another goaltender shuffle after Mitchell Gibson came back from the ECHL.
On Dec. 2, 2023, Hershey announced that Mitchell Gibson was being re-assigned from the South Carolina Stingrays to the Bears, fresh off ECHL duty. The move gave Hershey a third goalie again, which usually only happens when Washington is about to borrow one.

We had seen this movie before. Earlier that fall, Gibson bounced between Hershey and South Carolina while Clay Stevenson and Hunter Shepard yo-yoed to cover NHL needs, a pretty clear organizational pattern.

That morning in Vegas, Charlie Lindgren skipped the Capitals' skate for «body maintenance,» leaving Darcy Kuemper as the lone goalie on the ice. It did not take a detective to connect that absence with Hershey suddenly pulling Gibson up from the ECHL.
The Hockey News
Hunter Shepard was absolutely rolling for Hershey at that point, sitting at 9-1-0 with strong underlying numbers after a Calder Cup MVP run the previous spring. If Washington needed a short-term stopgap, Shepard was the obvious name.

Sure enough, a few hours after the Gibson news, the Capitals officially recalled Shepard from Hershey to back up Kuemper against the Golden Knights, and the transaction dominoes all lined up perfectly.

Mitchell Gibson move signals Hunter Shepard answer
If you follow this team long enough, you start reading goalie recalls like storm warnings, and fans were buzzing as soon as Gibson left South Carolina.
Mitchell Gibson is more than a paperwork footnote here. The 2018 fourth-round pick, taken 124th overall by Washington, was 24 that season and coming off a 22-14-3, 2.56, .899 run with the Stingrays, plus a tidy 1.92 goals-against in a tiny Hershey sample.
Elite Prospects
For those who want to revisit the timeline in real time, RMNB captured the whole thing in their original piece that flagged Gibson's recall as the first clue.

That weekend was a neat snapshot of how the Capitals like to operate in net, with Kuemper and Lindgren at the NHL level, Shepard ready as the proven AHL hammer, and Stevenson and Gibson providing depth. The chain from Stingrays to Bears to Capitals worked exactly as designed.

Looking back now, the lesson for fans is simple. When Hershey suddenly pulls Mitchell Gibson off an ECHL roster, it usually means Washington's crease is about to get interesting again.
