Cole Hutson and Petr Sikora headline Washington Capitals prospects at the 2026 World Juniors, with 2026 NHL Draft names like Gavin McKenna looming too.

The 2026 IIHF World Junior Championship runs Dec. 26, 2025 to Jan. 5, 2026 in Saint Paul and Minneapolis, and it should be a perfect scouting storm.
From the Capitals' side, Hutson is the big one, and yes, he's on Team USA's preliminary roster again. Washington took him 43rd overall in 2024, and his calling card is still pace, puck touches, and instant exits.

Caps prospects meet the 2026 NHL Draft

Honestly, Caps fans have been begging for a real World Juniors pipeline, and this year finally feels like it. On the draft side, Hockey Canada's camp includes projected 2026 top pick Gavin McKenna plus blue liner Keaton Verhoeff, and both scream game-breaking upside.
McKenna plays like he's already solved the chessboard, he attacks seams, then hits the late trailer without hesitating. Verhoeff's appeal is the opposite vibe, he closes gaps early, kills entries, and still has enough touch to start the transition.
For Capitals prospects outside the U.S. camp, Petr Sikora is on Czechia's roster and he brings a pro-style middle-lane drive. Washington grabbed him 178th overall in 2024, and his value is how he gets inside position, then makes the next play under pressure.
Germany's list includes Maxim Schäfer, a 2025 third-rounder at 96th overall, and his path is straight lines and puck pressure. If Germany survives, it'll be because guys like Schäfer win shifts with forecheck stops and quick counter attacks.
Then there's Switzerland's Leon Muggli, taken 52nd overall in 2024, who can carry big minutes when games tighten up. Sweden also has 2025 second-rounder Milton Gästrin, 37th overall, a center who can stabilize a line with faceoffs and smart support routes.
Nick Kempf is the other Caps name to circle for Team USA, because one hot goalie run changes everything in a short tournament. For Washington, this WJC is less about hype and more about who looks ready for the next development jump when January hits.
