Alex Ovechkin keeps rewriting records while Nic Dowd just smiles, because the Washington Capitals still run through number eight.

On Monday against the Los Angeles Kings, Alex Ovechkin ripped home the game winner in a 2-1 Capitals victory, snapping LA's long road heater and finally giving Washington a little breathing room in the standings.

The goal was his 903rd in the NHL and, more specifically, his 442nd at Capital One Arena, pushing him past Gordie Howe for most goals at a single venue.

That is the backdrop for Nic Dowd's now viral answer when Sammi Silber asked whether he sees Ovechkin «getting back in the groove» with goals in three of his last four. He barely blinked, calling Ovechkin «the GOAT» and saying he was not surprised at all.
Dowd's point is backed by the numbers, because he has four goals in his last seven games after a slower October.
When Ovechkin is humming like this, the whole Caps attack looks different, with cleaner neutral zone entries and more dangerous looks from that left circle that has terrified goalies for two decades.

Alex Ovechkin's groove lifts Washington Capitals

From a fan seat, this feels like the classic Ovechkin surge, the one where every offensive zone touch feels like it might end up in the upper mesh.
Tactically, you can see the ripple on that fourth line too, because Dowd's group is spending more time forechecking instead of stuck defending, which means fresher legs when Ovechkin's unit jumps over the boards.
Big picture, the single venue record is just another line on an already ridiculous résumé, but hitting it now matters because Washington is clawing for a Wild Card spot and needs every edge it can find.
Dowd calling Ovechkin the GOAT does not move the standings, yet it captures where the room seems to be mentally, trusting that their 40-year-old captain can still tilt a game with one shot.
