Rumors about Mitch Marner's future with the Leafs have been running rampant ever since they were eliminated from the playoffs. It appears now that Marner will be testing the free agency market, and Washington is a likely landing spot for the star winger.

Mitch Marner is considered to be the hottest commodity in the market, and the Washington Capitals need a star forward, in particular since Ovechkin will possibly be heading to Russia when his contract expires following the 2025-26 season.
According to the Chris Johnston Show, Mitch Marner will test the open market, but the Leafs will be a team he considers on July 1st.
"Took a risky pick on a small kid from Toronto," Marner said in a video statement posted on social media, "and I'll be forever grateful to be able to wear the Maple Leaf."

There have been multiple reports that link Mitch Marner to the Washington Capitals, with several surfacing after Ovechkin suggested he would not be returning to the Caps once his contract expired.
A 100 point winger, Mitch Marner would fit in nicely with the Capitals offense and style of play, a system that would benefit Marner's skills and creative abilities with the puck. He would be a perfect addition to Spencer Carbery's bench.
According to Sportsnet.ca, Washington is a perfect landing spot for Marner. The Caps are in a transition period, and could use Marner to bridge the gap, though the team would likely need to make some salary maneuvering to accommodate the star winger.
Though several teams will be pursuing Mitch Marner, it is not clear towards which team he is leaning, as the Marner camp have not made any announcements one way or another.
Given Marner's ability to play a top role on a team, and still produce while playing with other superstars on the same line, it may just be Ovechkin that turns Marner toward signing with the Caps, one last chance to play with an icon and win a cup.
The possibility is certainly worth considering.
