Justin Sourdif and Ryan Leonard gave the Washington Capitals a jolt.

Monday night at Capital One Arena, Sourdif popped his first NHL hat trick and added two assists in a 7-4 win over the Anaheim Ducks. Alex Ovechkin scored twice, and Connor McMichael piled up four assists.
Washington badly needed a clean-feeling result, even if the finish got messy. The Caps entered 22-15-6 and had dropped two straight, then watched a 5-1 lead shrink to 5-4 before the empty-netters landed.
The fun part was how the Sourdif line created offense without forcing it. McMichael pushed pace through the neutral zone, Leonard hunted pucks on the forecheck, and Sourdif found soft spots in the slot for quick-release looks.

You could feel the building relax when that line started cooking, because it finally looked like confidence instead of survival hockey. Fans have been begging for a kid line that plays fast and actually smiles.
Sourdif admitted he couldn't even remember the last time he posted five points, maybe back in minor hockey as a teenager. On his hat-trick tip-in, he also raved about Leonard spotting the backdoor lane instead of ripping a one-timer look.
Leonard deserves a little extra shine here, because the details keep showing up. The 20-year-old, drafted eighth overall in 2023, keeps plays alive on entries and turns loose pucks into instant slot chances.
Sourdif, 23, was a 2020 third-round pick, 87th overall by the Florida Panthers, and Washington bought low in June with draft picks. Spencer Carbery's message after the game was simple, the opportunity was earned, not handed over.
The warning sign is obvious, too, since the Ducks still generated 45 shots and made Lindgren work for 41 saves. If Washington can pair that scoring punch with cleaner exits on Thursday, this could finally feel like a turning point.
