It was supposed to be Alex Ovechkin's night - a career-defining milestone and a moment for the hockey world to celebrate. But instead, it briefly turned into a bizarre scene when St. Louis Blues goalie Jordan Binnington tried to hide the 900-goal puck in his pants.

The goal itself was vintage Ovechkin. Teammates flooded the ice to congratulate the 40-year-old captain, who became the first player in NHL history to score 900 goals. But as the celebration continued, the puck - that historic piece of rubber - went missing.
Replays showed Binnington slyly tucking it away in his equipment. The referees quickly retrieved it, and Ovechkin eventually got the puck, but the moment left some Capitals furious.
«It's a special night for our guy,» defenseman John Carlson said afterward. «Maybe not the best time for a joke.»

John Carlson voices frustration over Binnington's move

Carlson, Ovechkin's longtime teammate and alternate captain, didn't hide his annoyance. «That's history right there,» he said. «You play this game long enough to respect that kind of milestone. Nobody in the league has ever done it before. That puck belongs to him, period.»
Binnington, known for his fiery personality, later shrugged off the moment as «a bit of fun,» but the Capitals weren't laughing. For Ovechkin, who smiled and called it «a weird one,» the night still held its magic. His third goal of the season and 900th of his career came in game No. 1,504- another record-setting number in itself.
Here's Sammi Silber's post capturing Carlson's reaction:
The puck, safely in Ovechkin's hands now, will likely end up where it belongs - in the Hall of Fame. And while Binnington's antics briefly stole the spotlight, nothing could truly overshadow one of the greatest milestones the sport has ever seen.
