The word from the morning skate: defenseman John Carlson is dealing with what the team describes as an upper-body injury and did not skate this morning ahead of tonight's matchup with the New Jersey Devils, making his availability a game-time decision. The fact that Carlson is even in this position at age 35 underlines how valuable he remains for the Washington Capitals.

Carlson has posted four goals and 14 points in the first 17 games of the season, a strong return for a veteran defender. He remains a fixture on the top power-play unit and retains critical minutes in all situations.
His role on special teams continues to stand out. He still quarterbacks the power play, and despite his age he isn't being sheltered. The Capitals rely on him for zone exits, transition passes, and jump-starts on the man-advantage. If he's unavailable tonight the Capitals will lose more than just a veteran presence-they'll lose a key intact piece of their strategic fabric.
Not only does Carlson lead all defensemen in points, he's third overall on the team, he leads them in ice-time, powerplay points, takeaways & third in blocked shots.

Carlson's influence still driving Capitals' attack

From a fan or analyst perspective it's easy to say we're lucky to still have Carlson skating the top PP unit and logging big minutes. His production and endurance at this stage of his career prove that Washington hasn't had to fully replace their core blue-liner. His absence tonight would be felt in the slot coverage, in entry defence and on the blue line breakout the Devils will taunt.
Tonight's matchup suddenly has extra weight. The Devils will target that blue-line disruption and test life without Carlson's reading of the rush and his one-timers from the point. For Washington the hope is that this is a scare, not a sitting-out trend. Either way, the situation raises the question: how deep is the roster beyond those veteran stalwarts when they miss time?
