It's been a whirlwind ride for forward Justin Sourdif and the Washington Capitals this season as he finally gets to skate alongside franchise icon Alex Ovechkin-and the rookie says it's «unreal» to share the ice with the Great Eight.

Sourdif grew up admiring the Capitals and still owns Ovechkin's alternate-captain jersey from the «Rock the Red» era.
When the team acquired the 23-year-old from the Florida Panthers this past June for two draft picks, the move quickly became «full circle» for the Vancouver Island native.
On the ice, Sourdif has spoken candidly about how surreal it is to now practice, train, and compete side-by-side with Ovechkin. That veteran presence, the way Ovechkin attacks every shift and still celebrates like it's his first goal-it leaves an impression. The coaching staff has also noticed how that energy filters through the younger players and lifts the entire group.

Sourdif soaking in Ovechkin's impact

Fan or analyst, what you're seeing is a young player who's wide-eyed but ready to work, and a legend who still drives the locker room. Sourdif has admitted the process keeps him humble, but also hungry. He knows he's earned this chance not just because of the trade but because he's shown two-way capability and the willingness to adapt.
Meanwhile, Ovechkin remains the same competitive force he's been for nearly two decades-with scoring marks, leadership moments and milestones that young players like Sourdif soak up like textbooks. The idea of skating with Ovechkin wasn't a distant dream for Sourdif-it was part of his childhood script now being written in real time.
With the season underway and expectations rising, Sourdif's ability to absorb what Ovechkin brings-instinct, shot, presence-and convert that into his own game could make a difference. The Capitals are encouraging the young winger to stay grounded and focused shift by shift.
If this pairing matures, the story won't just be about one legend or one rookie. It could be about the next wave of Capitals identity anchored by greatness and fueled by fresh blood. For now, though, Sourdif gets to say the word: «unreal.»
