Connor McMichael's move up the middle has given him opportunity but also exposed how much the Washington Capitals still need clarity down the center.

Alan May's comment during the broadcast hit a nerve. The former Capital said McMichael «isn't a playmaker in that role,» and that he looks like he's «overthinking things.» For a young forward trying to cement himself as a top-six center, that observation feels both fair and painful.
McMichael has four points in 15 games, just one of them a goal. The numbers don't scream failure, but they do show a player fighting rhythm. He skates well, backchecks hard, and competes on every shift, yet the puck just hasn't followed him in the offensive zone. McMichael is coming off a career year where he scored 26 goals and 57 points, mostly playing on the wing.
With Pierre-Luc Dubois sidelined, Washington needed McMichael to carry the 2C load. Instead, the line has looked tentative on entries and static in the slot. Too often, McMichael defers rather than drives, trying to make the safe pass instead of forcing the play inside.
The coaching staff's patience seems intact for now, but it's clear they need him to assert himself. When McMichael plays instinctively, he can flash real creativity. When he hesitates, his reads slow and the play dies on his stick.

Connor McMichael needs to trust his instincts

Fans see the same thing May sees: a gifted skater caught in his own head. It's hard not to sympathize. Every shift feels like a test, and every quiet night fuels the next round of lineup talk. For a 24-year-old trying to break through, that's a tough rhythm to live in.
Still, there's optimism that a spark will come. McMichael's line has had flashes of chemistry, and his underlying numbers show he's creating more shots than his points suggest. Once the puck bounces right, the confidence might follow fast.
For now, Washington just needs McMichael to be himself, not Pierre-Luc Dubois's stand-in. The talent is there; the timing just needs to catch up.
