Good sign for the Washington Capitals as forward/center Nic Dowd skated today after missing the previous two games with an upper-body injury. The veteran's participation in practice raises the prospects of him rejoining the lineup soon.

Dowd has already been ruled out of tonights game against the Tampa Bay Lightning, but he is officially skating in a regular practice jersey again.
Dowd had sat out since his unexpected scratch on Wednesday when he was ruled out for the matchup versus the Edmonton Oilers due to the injury.
Prior to the absence he logged meaningful minutes, averaging over 15 minutes and contributing five points in 19 games this season.
His return now provides a boost to the bottom of the roster, where his defensive reliability, face-offs and penalty‐kill role make him a trusted piece. With Dowd in the fold the third and fourth lines remain balanced, a key factor for the Capitals when facing heavy opposition checking lines. The club likely sees his return as restoring immediate depth rather than expecting a gradual build-up.

Dowd's presence reinforces Capitals' roster depth

From a fan or analyst point of view, seeing Dowd back on the ice feels like a comforting sign that one of the unsung stabilisers is coming back to steady the ship. The Capitals will hope he avoids any setbacks and slips directly into his role.
Coach Spencer Carbery and the staff now have the option to reinsert Dowd into his usual assignment without awkward mid-game juggling. That helps with line chemistry, especially given his long run in Washington and familiarity with the system. If he is cleared to play soon this could spark an uptick in the team's fourth-line effectiveness, which has its ups and downs in any season.
In sum, while it's still early and the injury was upper-body so caution remains, there's no red flag hanging over his recovery at present. The Capitals look set to get back a dependable player, and the timing couldn't be better as they continue to chase consistency and the next win-run.
