A small change can spark a big shift. Since moving from center to the wing, Hendrix Lapierre has looked like a completely different player for the Washington Capitals.

Lapierre's speed and instincts have always been evident, but playing on the flank seems to have unlocked his game in a new way. Without the heavier defensive responsibilities of a center, he's playing freer, attacking with pace, and reading plays instinctively.
That freedom showed clearly in his latest performance. According to Sammi Silber, Lapierre led all Capitals skaters in scoring-chance percentage at 5-on-5 (66.67) and topped all forwards in expected goals for percentage (62.14). Those are elite numbers for any player, let alone one still cementing his NHL spot.
It's not just analytics, though. Lapierre looks faster, looser, and more decisive. His first few steps are creating separation, and his passes through seams are connecting more often. He's driving play, not just reacting to it.

Hendrix Lapierre finding rhythm since position change

Head coach Spencer Carbery deserves credit for the switch. With Pierre-Luc Dubois sidelined, the team's forward mix had to adjust. Sliding Lapierre to the wing alongside Connor McMichael and Tom Wilson turned out to be a smart spark, balancing youth and experience on a line that suddenly clicks.
Fans have noticed, too. The chatter online praises Lapierre's confidence, pointing out how he's playing with purpose rather than hesitation. It's the kind of growth you hope to see from a 22-year-old still learning what works at this level.
Here's the stat post from Sammi Silber that sums up Lapierre's rise:
If he keeps playing like this, Lapierre might not move back to center anytime soon. The Capitals need energy and pace in their middle six, and he's providing both in spades. Sometimes, a new view of the ice is all it takes to look like a new player.
