Justin Sourdif hat trick has Washington Capitals buzzing against Anaheim Ducks.

On Monday night, the Capitals' PR feed dropped the kind of update you never forget, Justin Sourdif had finished his first career hat trick. Washington needed a spark, and the rookie winger lit the whole rink.
Sourdif's night started fast, two first-period strikes that turned a shaky opening into a lead. The third one came in the second, a quick finish that pushed Washington out to a 4-1 cushion.
The best part for Spencer Carbery was how it happened, not just that it happened. The Caps were moving pucks cleanly through the neutral zone, then getting bodies into the slot instead of firing from the boards.

Justin Sourdif hat trick lifts Capitals attack

As a fan, you could feel the building exhale when Sourdif buried number three. Doing it with Tom Wilson sidelined made it feel even louder, because the lineup needed someone else to drive the top six.
Sourdif is 23, and this is the upside bet Washington made when it brought him in after Florida drafted him 87th overall in 2020. On Monday, he played like a guy who wants that job to stay his.
Connor McMichael was the engine underneath it, piling up four assists and constantly creating clean entries for his linemates. When McMichael plays north like that, the Caps' forecheck suddenly looks connected instead of hopeful.
Alex Ovechkin also chipped in with his 16th of the season, and that mattered after a quiet stretch by his standards. The Caps' power play looked simpler, get set, get a puck to the middle, then hunt rebounds.
Anaheim pushed back, and the score tightened to 5-3 as the third got going, so it was not a victory lap. Charlie Lindgren had to hold his ground through traffic and keep second chances from turning into chaos.
Hat tricks are fun, but this one felt useful, like a hinge game for a January run. Now the milestone is repeating the detail level next time, not chasing the highlight.
