Carbery admits Capitals lack a true finisher right now

After Tuesday's 5-0 loss to the Minnesota Wild, Washington has scored two goals or fewer in four straight games. The skid also followed a 5-1 beating in Winnipeg, and it has made the recent climb up the standings feel shaky.

On Wednesday morning, Carbery put the problem in plain terms, the Caps don't have enough game-breaking offensive talent. He said creating offense and finishing will always be an Achilles heel for how this roster is built, even with 40-year-old Alex Ovechkin still on the card.

Caps fans heard that and immediately thought, here we go again, chances without killers. When the skill edge is thin, Washington has to squeeze goals out of details, harder net drives, quicker puck support, and second-effort rebounds.

At five-on-five, the process can look fine until the moment you need a clean shot from the slot. Too many shifts die on the perimeter, and without a one-on-one separator, you need the middle lane occupied so loose pucks turn into chaos.

The power play is the loudest alarm, sitting at 15.6 percent and sliding near the bottom of the league. One goal in the last 15 chances is rough enough, and giving up a shorthanded goal Tuesday is the kind of self-inflicted wound that flips momentum fast.

Losing Ryan Leonard for three to four weeks only sharpens Carbery's point. The 20-year-old, taken eighth overall in 2023, has 18 points with seven goals and 11 assists in 29 games, and he brings the one-on-one pop this lineup lacks.

Carbery even pointed back to that 7-1 win over San Jose as a Leonard example, two elite moments where he beat a defender and finished. That is the «solve it yourself» gear the Caps do not have enough of right now.

Tom Wilson leads the team with 32 points, 17 goals and 15 assists in 33 games, but nobody is above a point per night. At 18-11-4 they're still positioned well, yet three straight losses make every empty shift feel louder.
