Capitals vs. Jets: Game Recap

Washington Capitals and Logan Thompson hit a bump in Winnipeg, but Jakob Chychrun kept the scoreboard honest.
The Caps fell 5-1 to the Winnipeg Jets on Saturday, snapping a nine game point streak. Washington entered at 18-10-4, and this one felt like a reset button.
From the opening shift, the Jets' forecheck pinched Washington into rushed exits and sloppy handoffs. Too many clears died at the half wall, and the slot stayed unprotected behind it.
Connor Hellebuyck returned from knee surgery and only had to solve 24 shots, because the Caps could not sustain zone time. When Washington did enter cleanly, the second touch was usually late.
Washington Capitals and Logan Thompson need a reset
Caps fans can stomach one clunker, but the quiet middle of the ice looked way too familiar.
Logan Thompson faced 35 shots and stopped 30, yet the scoreline still got away early. Jakob Chychrun's lone goal came on a late 5-on-3, he was the 16th pick in 2016 by Arizona.
Bogdan Trineyev also made his NHL debut, skating 11:45 and recording a blocked shot. The 23-year-old winger was a 2020 fourth-rounder, and his straight-line game fits a bottom-six job.
Spencer Carbery called out execution, and you could see why on every failed breakout pass. Washington's power play at least cashed once, but the five chances came too late to matter.
Next up is Tuesday in Minnesota, and the Wild just grabbed Quinn Hughes in a blockbuster deal with Vancouver. Hughes changes their breakouts and first-unit puck movement, so Washington's gap control has to be sharp.
This trip is a good reminder that structure still wins, even for an 18-10-4 team. Clean up the exits, win the first five minutes, and Tuesday feels like the right measuring stick.
