Top spot in the Metropolitan is on the line Thursday as the Washington Capitals host the Carolina Hurricanes to close a short divisional homestand.

Washington arrives Thursday at 18-9-3, clinging to first in the East with Carolina right behind at 18-9-2. They share matching 10-5-1 home records, so the margin here feels as thin as a lucky bounce.
The Capitals just finished a 3-0-1 road swing that grabbed seven of eight possible points and yanked them out of the conference basement.
Back home on Sunday they ground out a tired but tidy 2-0 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets to open this homestand.
Carolina rolls in off Tuesday's 4-1 win against Columbus, a result that pushed a seven game homestand to a respectable 4-3-0. Seth Jarvis buried his team leading seventeenth goal, and Brandon Bussi improved to 9-1-0 while allowing just one on twenty four shots.
The numbers scream heavyweight matchup, with Washington averaging 3.43 goals and 2.40 against, and Carolina sitting at 3.34 and 2.83 respectively.
Logan Thompson's 13-6-2 record and .925 save percentage slightly outshine Bussi's 9-1-0, 2.09 and .909 line, but neither goalie has blinked much this year.
These teams already met on November eleventh, when the Capitals walked into Raleigh and snapped a four game Hurricanes streak with a 4-1 win.

Capitals and Hurricanes chase Metro edge

Tom Wilson leads Washington with thirty two points and seventeen goals, powering a top line that finally looks comfortable living in the hard areas again.
Center Dylan Strome quietly stacks seventeen assists, and his patience on entries has been a big reason the offense now feels less rush dependent.
For Carolina, Sebastian Aho sits at twenty six points, while Jarvis's seventeen goals give them the kind of finishing punch that punishes small defensive lapses.
On the blue line, Shayne Gostisbehere already has nineteen assists, and his east west puck movement keeps the Hurricanes power play threatening.
Tactically, the question is whether Washington can exit clean against that layered forecheck and still get numbers to the net without trading rushes.
