Washington Capitals open a Capital One Arena homestand Saturday against the Chicago Blackhawks, chasing traction in the 2025-26 season.

They grabbed a 2-0 lead in Ottawa on Thursday, then watched it slip in a 4-3 loss. It was their first blown multi-goal lead this season, and it stung.
Washington owned a 6-0 edge in five-on-five high-danger chances in the first period, per Natural Stat Trick. Over the last 40 minutes, Ottawa flipped it 8-1.
At 21-15-5, the Caps are 4-6-3 in their last 13 and sliding in the Metro. Saturday starts six home games in their next eight, a chance to reset the forecheck and puck support.

Fans can feel the wobble right now, because the Caps look fast early and tentative later. Tom Wilson has 22 goals in 40 games, so the engine is there.
Dylan Strome has 32 points in 39 games, and Alex Ovechkin is still driving play at 39 with 15 goals. The key is sustaining zone time, tighter line changes, and fewer soft clears.
Chicago arrives 15-18-7 and hasn't won back-to-back since mid-November. The Hawks are missing Connor Bedard, who still has 44 points, and Frank Nazar, both out injured.
Without Bedard, Chicago will likely lean on straight lines, chips behind the defense, and a heavy net drive. Washington has to close the slot first, then let Jakob Chychrun and Aliaksei Protas push the pace.
Logan Thompson has a 2.39 goals-against average and a .913 save percentage, so the baseline in net is solid. The power play has lagged, so quick puck movement to Ovechkin's one-timer matters.
If Washington strings together clean shifts, Capital One Arena will sound like it again. Saturday is the first step of a January grind, and this matchup is where the tone gets set.
