A big test lands tonight for the Washington Capitals as they visit the red-hot Carolina Hurricanes, who are riding a four-game win streak and chasing a fifth.

Carolina's lineup, though, isn't quite at full strength. Top defenseman Jacob Slavin will miss the game, leaving a gap in the Canes' top pair and penalty kill. Slavin has only played in 2 games this season, his last being against the Philadelphia Flyers back on October 11th. Shayne Gostisbehere, who has missed the last five games with a lower-body injury, appears ready to return. His puck-moving style brings offensive spark, but the absence of Slavin shifts Carolina's balance on the back end.
Frederik Andersen will start for the Hurricanes, as confirmed by team reporter Walt Ruff. Andersen has been steady, posting strong numbers in his recent starts, while Washington is expected to counter with Logan Thompson after a composed weekend outing.
Washington's recent stretch has been defined by streaks of solid defense followed by lapses in coverage. Against Carolina's heavy forecheck, the key will be clean zone exits and avoiding turnovers in the slot. Without Slavin's stabilizing play, the Capitals might find room to attack off the cycle and create second-chance looks.
Fans sense an opportunity here. Carolina's system stays relentless, but without its best all-around defenseman, the matchup feels more even. Miller & Walker will see heavy minutes, but depth will be tested if Washington's forecheck clicks early.
Here are the lines the Hurricanes are expected to start with for tonights meeting against the Capitals:
Svechnikov - Aho - Jarvis
Ehlers - Stankoven - Blake
Carrier - Staal - Martinook
Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson

Miller - Walker
Nikishin - Gostisbehere
Reilly - Nystrom

If Washington can weather Carolina's early push and capitalize on a thinner blue line, they could earn a statement win in a tough building. The margin tonight may come down to who wins the net-front battles late.
