Washington Capitals wait on Aliaksei Protas as Logan Thompson starts in Chicago.

That was the word Friday from Bailey Johnson, who reported Protas is a game-time decision with a lower-body issue. Johnson added Jakob Chychrun and Justin Sourdif are good to go, with Declan Chisholm expected to draw in for Dylan McIlrath.
The timing is brutal because this is the Mentors' Trip, and the Caps could use every ounce of calm they can find. Mike Vogel's game preview had Washington at 22-16-6 and stressed that Protas is closer than Tom Wilson, with Pierre-Luc Dubois still out.
When Protas is missing, it is not just one winger out of the mix, it changes how Washington plays. The 24-year-old has 16 goals and 31 points in 41 games this season, and the Caps drafted him 91st overall in 2019.

Aliaksei Protas uncertainty tests Logan Thompson plan

Caps fans can handle a scratch, but the waiting-around feeling before warmups drives everyone nuts. The upside is Sourdif has already shown he can carry weight, highlighted by a hat trick and five points earlier this week.
If Protas cannot go, the knock-on effect is down the middle of the ice. Washington loses a big body who can protect pucks on entries, and it makes those second chances in the slot harder to manufacture.
On the back end, Chisholm for McIlrath is a very specific tradeoff in style. Chisholm helps your first pass and exits, while McIlrath's value is simple, win the net front, finish checks, and keep scrums honest.
Thompson starting also tells you the staff wants structure, not chaos. Against a Chicago team that can turn loose pucks into quick strikes, Washington has to keep the dots clean and avoid tired clears up the wall.
The Caps do not need perfect hockey, they need connected hockey for long stretches. Friday night is a chance to look steadier, get healthier, and head to the next stop with momentum instead of more questions.
