Even the greats hit rough stretches. Alex Ovechkin isn't immune. The veteran captain of the Washington Capitals admits he's «a little struggling,» yet remains upbeat as he continues chasing goal No. 900.

At age 40, Ovechkin is still writing history-he holds the NHL's all-time goal-scoring record after passing Wayne Gretzky last season. But this fall, he's off to a sluggish start. Through 12 games, he has just five points (2 goals, 3 assists) and is averaging his lowest ice time in years. The Capitals' offense as a whole is averaging just 2.58 goals per game-26th in the NHL.
Ovechkin knows what's missing. «You can see some injuries, power play didn't work well,» he said. «But we just have to stick together and keep working hard. Eventually, you will score.»
And score he must. His legendary shot from the left face-off circle has been dialled back, visibly slowed by missed training camp time and the wear of two decades at the top level. His expected-goals rate at even strength has dipped below 45 percent, while Washington's power play - once a playground for Ovechkin's one-timer - is converting at just 15 percent.

Ovechkin framing the slump as a process

Rather than complain, Ovechkin sounds like a teacher for younger players. He emphasises patience, staying the course and trusting the system. With recent injuries to teammates like Pierre‑Luc Dubois, the focus turns to the group as a whole-but he still understands his role.
The milestone chase remains very much alive. Approaching 900 career goals is the ultimate currency for Ovechkin's legacy-but he's clear: the team's improvement comes first. He's tasked with lifting himself out of a cold stretch while still delivering leadership and drive.
If there's one thing we know about Ovechkin, it's that he's done this before. Momentum change is just one shift away-if the shot returns, so will the headlines.
