Alex Ovechkin adds another item to his Hall of Fame collection
Anze Kopitar got the full Washington Capitals treatment, from a team gift to an Alex Ovechkin jersey and a Tom Wilson chirp. The Los Angeles Kings captain is on his goodbye tour, having already said this season will be his last in the NHL.
The league has been stacking up tributes, and Washington decided to lean into something every player understands, jersey love.
In the clip shared by reporter Sammi Silber, team staff first hand Kopitar a Capitals sweater loaded with signatures from the whole room. He smiles, poses, and you can already feel the respect for a future Hall of Famer who tormented the East from afar.
Then comes the encore, a second sweater, this one signed by Alex Ovechkin, the NHL's all time goal king and the face of the franchise.
Tom Wilson quickly points at the Ovechkin jersey and says, «That's the good one. That's the one you want.»
From a fan angle, this is perfect, a little chirp, a ton of respect, and everyone leaves grinning. Kopitar fires back with a laughing «No offense,» and suddenly you can almost hear every Caps fan yelling that the room signed sweater is pretty decent too.
Moments like this hit differently because of who is involved, a two time Stanley Cup champion center and the league's most prolific goal scorer swapping souvenirs in a hallway.
Alex Ovechkin jersey steals the Anze Kopitar show
It feels like a private joke that the cameras happened to catch, not a scripted ceremony.
For Capitals fans, there is also something quietly cool about Wilson playing hype man for Ovechkin's signature. The veteran winger has grown from chaos engine into alternate captain, and teammates, including Ovechkin, have talked about him as a future leader of the room.
Kopitar getting that particular autograph in his farewell year also underlines how his era overlaps with Ovechkin's, two very different stars who defined a generation. One wins with two way control and quiet dominance, the other with volume scoring and noise, but the mutual admiration is obvious.
When this season's story is told, the highlight packages will focus on records, milestones, and playoff pushes. Little hallway clips like this one, a captain leaving the league with an Ovechkin jersey and a Wilson chirp, are the memories fans will bring up years from now.
