The Vancouver Canucks have just announced they've hired former Colorado Avalanche legend Adam Foote as their new head coach. He steps in to replace Rick Tocchetm whose departure from the team in the offseason was anything but smooth.
After an extremely disappointing 2024-25 NHL campaign, the Vancouver Canucks found themselves in dire straits.
The longstanding beef between former superstar J.T. Miller and Elias Pettersson ultimately lead to the demise of the organization, forcing Rick Tocchet's hand to walk away from the drama all-together.
Vancouver Canucks hire Adam Foote as head coach
According to Canucks Daily, Although lacking in head coach experience in the NHL, Foote has been with the Vancouver Canucks since 2023 when he joined the team as their assistant coach after serving as the head coach of the Kelowna Rockets in the Western Hockey League (WHL) and as the defensive mind for the Colorado Avalanche for 7 years.
Among the front runners were AHL head coach of the Abbotsford Canucks Manny Malhotra, Assistant coach Adam Foote, John Tortorella and Marco Sturm.
Where he lacks in coaching experience, he makes up for his experience being within the game for decades, playing 19 seasons as an elite defenseman between the Quebec Nordiques, Colorado Avalanche and Columbus Blue Jackets.
Although fans may be surprised with the decision, the Canucks need a fresh voice on the bench, and no body better to respect than an NHL legend.
While the Vancouver are far from the team fans witnessed in 2023-24, perhaps a fresh face behind the bench is the answer they're seeking.
It should be interesting to see how the Canucks respond to Adam Foote as the new voice of the team.
